Rickettsiales: Disease Models, Immunity and Vaccine Development, Saturday, June 20, 2015 - Tuesday, June 23, 2015
Location: Lake Tahoe, CA
Description: The need for new disease models, information on immune responses, and vaccine development for the above “rickettsial and related diseases” was addressed in a 2011 Institute of Medicine (IOM) workshop on tick-borne diseases. Filling these knowledge gaps has remained slow due to the intracellular nature of the above pathogens. They can be difficult to grow and maintain, some require high level biocontainment, and all are difficult to manipulate genetically. Therefore even the most basic research has lagged behind that of more traditionally extracellular bacteria. Recent advances in the field, however, have made studying these bacteria easier (though not easy), and the field is poised for substantial advancements if the right researchers can be brought to the bench to address the most pressing questions.
