Our Answer

We have identified the following information that we hope you find helpful. If you still have questions, please contact us.

Is a ketogenic diet known to help individuals with Lafora disease (LD)?

The impact of a long-term ketogenic diet in LD was studied in five individuals (Cardinali et al. 2006). Although the ketogenic diet was well-tolerated by patients and nutritional measures and laboratory findings remained stable, the ketogenic diet did not stop disease progression. The authors concluded that a ketogenic diet may still be able to slow down the progression of Lafora disease in some patients. However, larger studies are needed to evaluate the impact of a ketogenic diet in treating patients with LD.[1]
