Vasculitis occurs at any age, may be acute or chronic, and manifests with general symptoms such as fever, weight loss and fatigue, as well as more specific clinical signs depending on the type of vessels and organs affected. The degree of severity is variable, ranging from life or sight threatening disease (e.g. Behçet disease, see this term) to relatively minor skin disease.","GARD_Name__c":"Vasculitis","GARD_Synonym__c":"angiitis; inflammation of blood vessel; systemic vasculitis","Curated_Disease_Description_Source__c":"MONDO:0018882","Curated_Disease_Description__c":"Vasculitis is an inflammation of the blood vessels. It happens when the body's immune system attacks the blood vessel by mistake. It can happen because of an infection, a medicine, or another disease. The cause is often unknown.\r\n\r\nVasculitis can affect arteries, veins and capillaries. Arteries are vessels that carry blood from the heart to the body's organs. Veins are the vessels that carry blood back to the heart. Capillaries are tiny blood vessels that connect the small arteries and veins.\r\n\r\nWhen a blood vessel becomes inflamed, it can 1) narrow, making it more difficult for blood to get through, 2) close off completely so that blood can't get through 3) stretch and weaken so much that it bulges. The bulge is called an aneurysm. If it bursts, it can cause dangerous bleeding inside the body.\r\n\r\nSymptoms of vasculitis can vary, but usually include fever, swelling and a general sense of feeling ill. The main goal of treatment is to stop the inflammation. Steroids and other medicines to stop inflammation are often helpful.","Curated_USA_Estimate_Source__c":null,"Curated_USA_Estimate__c":"50,000","Age_at_Onset_Snippet_Text__c":null,"SourceID__c":"ORPHA:52759","Deprecated__c":"No","Disease_Concept_Type__c":"Rare Disease Grouping","MONDO_ID__c":"MONDO:0018882","ORPHANET_ID__c":"ORPHA:52759","Replaced_By_ID__c":null,"Display_Spanish_Disease_Name__c":"Vasculitis","Spanish_Description_Source__c":"ORPHA:52759","Spanish_Description__c":"El término vasculitis representa un grupo clínicamente heterogéneo de enfermedades de etiología multifactorial caracterizadas por la inflamación de vasos de gran tamaño (vasculitis macrovascular, p. ej. arteritis de células gigantes y arteritis de Takayasu; ver estos términos), vasos de tamaño medio (vasculitis de vasos medios, p. ej. periarteritis nodosa y enfermedad de Kawasaki; ver estos términos), o vasos pequeños (vasculitis microvascular, p. ej. granulomatosis de Wegener, poliangeítis microscópica, vasculitis por inmunoglobulina A, y vasculitis cutánea; ver estos términos).
