It is mainly found in females and is characterized by small or poorly developed eyes (microphthalmia) and characteristic linear skin markings on the head and neck. The signs and symptoms of this condition may include abnormalities of the brain, heart, and genitourinary system. Other symptoms may include short stature, developmental delay, and finger and toenails that do not grow normally (nail dystrophy). MLS syndrome is typically caused by either a deletion of certain genetic material on the p (short) arm of the X chromosome or by a mutation in the HCCS gene. In some cases, it may be caused by mutations in the COX7B and NDUFB11 genes, (also located on the X chromosome). According to the mutated gene, the disease may be classified in three subtypes. This condition is inherited in an X-linked manner and is thought to result in serious early developmental concerns in males, leading to almost no males with this condition surviving to delivery.Although there is no specific treatment or cure for MLS syndrome, there may be ways to manage the symptoms. A team of doctors is often needed to figure out the treatment options based on each person's symptoms.","GARD_Name__c":"Linear skin defects with multiple congenital anomalies","GARD_Synonym__c":"linear skin defects with multiple congenital anomalies type 1; mcops7; microphthalmia with linear skin defects syndrome; microphthalmia-dermal aplasia-sclerocornea syndrome; midas syndrome; mls syndrome; syndromic microphthalmia type 7","Curated_Disease_Description_Source__c":"GARD:0003659","Curated_Disease_Description__c":"Microphthalmia with linear skin defects syndrome is a disorder that mainly affects females. In people with this condition, one or both eyes may be very small or poorly developed (microphthalmia). Affected individuals also typically have unusual linear skin markings on the head and neck. These markings follow the paths along which cells migrate as the skin develops before birth (lines of Blaschko). The skin defects generally improve over time and leave variable degrees of scarring. The signs and symptoms of microphthalmia with linear skin defects syndrome vary widely, even among affected individuals within the same family. In addition to the characteristic eye problems and skin markings, this condition can cause abnormalities in the brain, heart, and genitourinary system. A hole in the muscle that separates the abdomen from the chest cavity (the diaphragm), which is called a diaphragmatic hernia, may occur in people with this disorder. Affected individuals may also have short stature and fingernails and toenails that do not grow normally (nail dystrophy).","Curated_USA_Estimate_Source__c":null,"Curated_USA_Estimate__c":"1,000","Age_at_Onset_Snippet_Text__c":"as a Newborn","SourceID__c":"ORPHA:2556","Deprecated__c":"No","Disease_Concept_Type__c":"Rare Disease Grouping","MONDO_ID__c":"MONDO:0010672","ORPHANET_ID__c":"ORPHA:2556","Replaced_By_ID__c":null,"Display_Spanish_Disease_Name__c":"Síndrome de microftalmia con defectos cutáneos lineales","Spanish_Description_Source__c":null,"Spanish_Description__c":null,"Spanish_Disease_Name__c":"síndrome de microftalmia con defectos cutáneos lineales","Spanish_GARD_Synonym__c":"mcops7; microftalmia sindrómica tipo 7; síndrome de microftalmia-aplasia dérmica-esclerocórnea; síndrome midas; síndrome mls","Category_Linearization__c":"ORPHA:93890","icd10_id__c":null,"mesh_id__c":null,"omim_id__c":null,"snomed_id__c":null,"umls_id__c":null,"GARD_Disease__c":[{"Curated_Disease_Description__c":"Microphthalmia with linear skin defects syndrome is a disorder that mainly affects females.
