Most affected individuals do not speak or speak only a few words. They may have temper tantrums, bite themselves, or exhibit other behavior problems. Most have structural abnormalities of the brain, and seizures occur in more than half of individuals with this disorder. Affected individuals usually have weak muscle tone (hypotonia) and difficulty swallowing (dysphagia). People with 1p36 deletion syndrome have a small head that is also unusually short and wide in proportion to its size (microbrachycephaly). Affected individuals also have distinctive facial features, including deep-set eyes with straight eyebrows; a sunken appearance of the middle of the face (midface hypoplasia); a broad, flat nose; a long area between the nose and mouth (philtrum); a pointed chin; and ears that are low-set, rotated backwards, and abnormally shaped. People with 1p36 deletion syndrome often have unusually short fingers and toes (brachydactyly), permanently bent fingers and toes (camptodactyly), and short feet. They may also have vision or hearing problems. Some affected individuals have abnormalities of the skeleton, heart, gastrointestinal system, kidneys, or genitalia.  Life expectancy varies in people with 1p36 deletion syndrome, but affected individuals can survive into early adulthood.","Curated_USA_Estimate_Source__c":null,"Curated_USA_Estimate__c":"200,000","Age_at_Onset_Snippet_Text__c":"during Pregnancy and as a Newborn","SourceID__c":"ORPHA:1606","Deprecated__c":"No","Disease_Concept_Type__c":"Rare Disease Entity","MONDO_ID__c":"MONDO:0011929","ORPHANET_ID__c":"ORPHA:1606","Replaced_By_ID__c":null,"Display_Spanish_Disease_Name__c":"Síndrome de deleción 1p36","Spanish_Description_Source__c":"ORPHA:1606","Spanish_Description__c":"Es una anomalía cromosómica poco frecuente caracterizada por rasgos faciales dismórficos distintivos, hipotonía, retraso del desarrollo, discapacidad intelectual, crisis epilépticas, defectos cardíacos, alteración o ausencia del habla y restricción del crecimiento de inicio prenatal.","Spanish_Disease_Name__c":"síndrome de deleción 1p36","Spanish_GARD_Synonym__c":"del(1)(p36); deleción 1p36; deleción 1pter; deleción subtelomérica 1p36; monosomía 1p36; monosomía 1pter","Category_Linearization__c":"ORPHA:93890","icd10_id__c":null,"mesh_id__c":null,"omim_id__c":null,"snomed_id__c":null,"umls_id__c":null,"GARD_Disease__c":[{"Curated_Disease_Description__c":"1p36 deletion syndrome is a disorder that typically causes intellectual disabilities. A patent ductus arteriosus (PDA) in the first 3 days of life is a physiologic shunt in healthy term and preterm newborn infants, and normally is substantially closed within about 24 hours after bith and completely closed after about three weeks. Failure of physiologcal closure is referred to a persistent or patent ductus arteriosus (PDA). Depending on the degree of left-to-right shunting, PDA can have clinical consequences.","HPO_Feature_URL__c":"https://hpo.jax.org/browse/term/HP:0001643","HPO_Synonym__c":"Ductus arteriosus; Patent ductus Botalli; PDA; Persistent arterial duct; Persistent ductus arteriosus","HPO_Name__c":"Patent ductus arteriosus","Feature_System__c":"Cardiovascular System","HPO_Feature_Type__c":"Symptom"}},{"Provided_By__c":"ORPHA:1606","HPO_Frequency__c":"Frequent (30-79%)","Feature__r":{"HPO_Description__c":"Any structural anomaly of the heart and blood vessels.","HPO_Feature_URL__c":"https://hpo.jax.org/browse/term/HP:0030680","HPO_Synonym__c":"Abnormality of cardiovascular system morphology; Cardiovascular malformations","HPO_Name__c":"Abnormal cardiovascular system morphology","Feature_System__c":"Cardiovascular System","HPO_Feature_Type__c":"Symptom"}},{"Provided_By__c":"ORPHA:1606","HPO_Frequency__c":"Occasional (5-29%)","Feature__r":{"HPO_Description__c":"Bilateral bulging of the lateral frontal bone prominences with relative sparing of the midline.","HPO_Feature_URL__c":"https://hpo.jax.org/browse/term/HP:0002007","HPO_Synonym__c":"Frontal protuberance; Skull bossing","HPO_Name__c":"Frontal bossing","Feature_System__c":"Musculoskeletal System","HPO_Feature_Type__c":"Symptom"}},{"Provided_By__c":"ORPHA:1606","HPO_Frequency__c":"Very frequent (80-99%)","Feature__r":{"HPO_Description__c":"A degree of language development that is significantly below the norm for a child of a specified age.","HPO_Feature_URL__c":"https://hpo.jax.org/browse/term/HP:0000750","HPO_Synonym__c":"Deficiency of speech development; Delayed language development; Delayed speech; Delayed speech acquisition; Delayed speech and language development; Delayed speech development; Impaired speech and language development; Impaired speech development; Language delay; Language delayed; Language development deficit; Late-onset speech development; Poor language development; Speech and language delay; Speech and language difficulties; Speech delay","HPO_Name__c":"Delayed speech and language development","Feature_System__c":"Nervous System","HPO_Feature_Type__c":"Symptom"}},{"Provided_By__c":"ORPHA:1606","HPO_Frequency__c":"Very frequent (80-99%)","Feature__r":{"HPO_Description__c":"Posterior positions and/or vertical shortening of the infraorbital and perialar regions, or increased concavity of the face and/or reduced nasolabial angle.","HPO_Feature_URL__c":"https://hpo.jax.org/browse/term/HP:0011800","HPO_Synonym__c":"Decreased size of midface; Flat midface; Hypoplasia of midface; Midface deficiency; Midface hypoplasia; Midface retrusion; Midface, flat; Retrusive midface; Underdevelopment of midface","HPO_Name__c":"Midface retrusion","HPO_Feature_Type__c":"Symptom"}},{"Provided_By__c":"ORPHA:1606","HPO_Frequency__c":"Frequent (30-79%)","Feature__r":{"HPO_Description__c":"Use of the same abnormal action in response to certain triggers or at random.
