It was originally thought to be a tumor originating from muscle cells and was named granular cell myoblastoma. Subsequent studies have suggested a derivation from Schwann cells. It affects females more often than males and it usually presents as a solitary mass. A minority of patients have multiple tumors. It can arise from many anatomic sites including the posterior pituitary gland, skin, oral cavity, esophagus, stomach, heart, mediastinum, and breast.","GARD_Name__c":"Granular cell tumor","GARD_Synonym__c":"abrikosoff's granulous cell tumor; abrikosoff's tumor; abrikosov's tumor; abrikossoff tumor; abrikossoff tumour; abrikossoff's tumor; abrikossoff's tumour; giant granulocellular abrikosov's tumor; granular cell myoblastoma; granular cell neoplasm; granular cell nerve sheath tumor; granular cell nerve sheath tumour; granular cell schwannoma; granular cell tumor (morphologic abnormality); granular cell tumour (morphologic abnormality); malignant variant of abrikosov's tumor","Curated_Disease_Description_Source__c":"GARD:0009618","Curated_Disease_Description__c":"Granular cell tumors (GCTs) are soft tissue tumors that can occur anywhere in the body. They are thought to arise from the cells that surround and insulate the nerve cells in our body (Schwann cells). Most Granular cell tumors are benign (non-cancerous), although some may be locally aggressive. GCTs affect females more often than males and usually present as a solitary painless mass. A few individuals have multiple GCTs. In most cases, these tumors are located in the skin of the head and neck, especially inside the mouth, the tongue being the most common site. They may also occur in the breast, heart, pituitary gland, stomach, esophagus, genitalia, and upper respiratory tract. GCTs may be part of some genetic syndromes, such as LEOPARD syndrome and neurofibromatosis.","Curated_USA_Estimate_Source__c":null,"Curated_USA_Estimate__c":null,"Age_at_Onset_Snippet_Text__c":null,"SourceID__c":null,"Deprecated__c":"No","Disease_Concept_Type__c":"Rare Disease Grouping","MONDO_ID__c":"MONDO:0006235","ORPHANET_ID__c":null,"Replaced_By_ID__c":null,"Display_Spanish_Disease_Name__c":null,"Spanish_Description_Source__c":null,"Spanish_Description__c":null,"Spanish_Disease_Name__c":null,"Spanish_GARD_Synonym__c":null,"Category_Linearization__c":null,"icd10_id__c":null,"mesh_id__c":null,"omim_id__c":null,"snomed_id__c":null,"umls_id__c":null,"GARD_Disease__c":[{"Curated_Disease_Description__c":"Granular cell tumors (GCTs) are soft tissue tumors that can occur anywhere in the body.
