Blepharophimosis-ptosis-epicanthus inversus syndrome (BPES) is a complex eyelid malformation present at birth. It is characterized by four major features. BPES causes blepharophimosis (narrowing of the eye opening). BPES causes ptosis (drooping eyelids). BPES causes epicanthus inversus (an extra fold of skin near the inner corner of the eye). BPES causes telecanthus (increased distance between the inner corners of the eyes). BPES type I includes those four major features and premature ovarian insufficiency (POI). POI is early loss of ovarian function that can lead to difficulty conceiving. BPES type II includes only the four major features. Other symptoms that may be present include lacrimal (tear) duct anomalies, and amblyopia (lazy eye). Symptoms also include strabismus (crossed eyes), and refractive errors (trouble seeing near or far).
