Summary
Placental site trophoblastic tumor is a rare type of cancer that can happen after a pregnancy, miscarriage, or termination. It starts in the place where the placenta was attached to the uterus. This tumor is made up of cells that produce a hormone called human placental lactogen (hPL). Unlike other types of tumors, this one usually does not cause tissue death and bleeding is not severe. Symptoms include irregular bleeding after a miscarriage or termination, or unexplained bleeding after a normal delivery or ectopic pregnancy. In some cases, the cancer may spread to other parts of the body.
