People catch the infection when they come in contact with soil contaminated with the worms.
While there are often no symptoms, abdominal pain, cough, diarrhea, rash, unintentional weight loss and vomiting may occur. The infection is treated with anti-worm medications such as ivermectin
Strongyloidiasis is found in tropical and subtropical areas, but can also be found in temperate regions, including the southern United States.
