Summary
Cutaneous neuroendocrine carcinoma is a rare, aggressive skin cancer. It usually develops as a single, painless, bump on sun-exposed skin. The bump may be skin-colored or red-violet, and tends to grow rapidly over weeks to months. It may spread quickly to surrounding tissues, nearby lymph nodes, or more distant parts of the body. Factors associated with developing cutaneous neuroendocrine carcinoma include increasing age, fair skin, a history of extensive sun exposure, chronic immune suppression, and the Merkel cell polyomavirus. The Merkel cell polyomavirus has been detected in most people who have cutaneous neuroendocrine carcinoma.

Endocrine System

The endocrine system is made up of a series of glands that produce and secrete hormones throughout the body, including the thyroid, pituitary, pineal, and adrenal glands, and the thymus, pancreas, testes, and ovaries. When endocrine glands produce too much or too little hormone, health problems such as weight gain, high blood pressure, and changes in sleep, mood, and behavior can occur. Disease of the endocrine can be diagnosed and treated by an endocrinologist.

Skin System

The skin or integumentary system is made up of skin, hair, nails, sweat glands, and oil glands. Common symptoms of problems in the skin system include redness, swelling, burning, itching, rashes, and hives. Skin diseases are often diagnosed and treated by dermatologists. Other specialists may also be involved including rheumatologists, allergists, and infectious disease doctors.

A malignant cutaneous tumor of the elderly that is characterized by an aggressive course with regional nodal involvement, distant metastases and a high rate of recurrence. Most patients present with rapidly growing, painless, firm, non-tender, dome-shaped red, occasionally ulcerated skin nodules, which have a red or bluish color, measuring up to several centimeters, on predominantly sun-exposed areas of the body. The overlying skin is smooth and shiny, sometimes exhibiting ulcerative, acneiform or telangiectatic features.
