How is adrenomyeloneuropathy treated?

The treatment of adrenomyeloneuropathy (AMN) varies based on the signs and symptoms present in each person. For example, steroid replacement therapy may be prescribed in people with adrenal insufficiency. Physical therapy may also be recommended to help build and maintain muscle strength.[1][2][3]

"Lorenzo's Oil" is currently under investigation as a treatment for AMN. Lorenzo's Oil is a mixture of two types of oil that is thought to help reduce the levels of very long-chain fatty acids in the body. From studies of its use in the treatment of X-linked adrenoleukodystrophy, it does not seem to alter the progression of the disease once the brain is involved. However, one study of 45 adults with AMN without cerebral involvement (only spinal cord affected) found that those treated with Lorenzo's Oil appeared to have slower progression of disease.[1][2][3]
