Novel genetic approaches have raised hopes of a widespread cure for sickle cell disease, possibly even within five to 10 years. In September, NIH’s National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute launched the Cure Sickle Cell Initiative to accelerate development of the most promising of these next generation of therapies.
